Liudi Lesa - Other Whispers, Other Shadows (CD + book)Liudi Lesa "Other Whispers, Other Shadows" (CD + book)

Label: Theo Records - THEO 009.
Collector's edition: CD in an envelope, 64-page full-color A5 hardcover book. Limited edition of 200 copies.
Release date: 25.10.2023

Liudi Lesa is a new ambitious project by Theodor Bastard dedicated to blending music and photography. The set of the edition includes a 64-page full-color A5 hardcover book (for the first time from Theodor Bastard!), which consists of graphic works and photographs by Alexander Starostin (Fedor Svolotch) made after his travels into the least explored regions of both Russia and the world. During the years of his autonomous campaigns, musician and artist Alexander Starostin visited with a camera the Rybachy Peninsula (the northernmost point of European Russia), the forests near the Dyatlov Pass in the Northern Urals, the cave system of Vietnam and Trans-Urals, the Khibiny Mountains, Syria, Lebanon and Iran. Having collected a huge archive, Starostin edited it using various innovative methods, turning it into a single exciting photo narrative. An integral part of this edition is the music written by Alexander Starostin in collaboration with Theodor Bastard's vocalist Yana Veva. Initially, these stringy and gloomy compositions were composed for computer games and movie soundtracks. Later it has become clear that the soundtrack to the book was the best way to use them. The photo project "Other Whispers, Other Shadows" focuses on visual anthropology, which emerged simultaneously with photography in the middle of the XIX century. Alexander Starostin transforms images of people and objects into new images. The result of these transformations is neither geometric normality nor ideal things and landscapes, but a kind of alternative to the norm. His photographs capture nature in a way that is not visible to the ordinary eye. The people of the forest on the other side of the photo look at us without tension and fear typical for the upcountry residents. They look even somewhat haughtily, as if it is not us looking at these pictures, but them carefully examining us. The visible and invisible worlds coexist in these photos, leaving a feeling of mysterious irregularity.

Theodor Bastard - Live In HeavenTheodor Bastard "Live In Heaven" (CD)

Label: Fulldozer Records - FDCD45.
6-panel digipak. Limited edition of 300 copies.
Release date: 03.08.2023

Fulldozer Records presents the long-awaited CD reissue of Theodor Bastard's early experimental album "Live In Heaven", originally released in 2001 in an extra-limited edition on cassette and CD-R in a handmade cardboard envelope. There are only three live albums in Theodor Bastard's discography, each of them vividly illustrates a certain stage of the band's creativity. "Live In Heaven" is at a crossroads between the band's early noise experiments and songwriting, captured on the next album "Pustota" (2004, Fulldozer Records). The album consists of seven tracks recorded in 2000-2001 in St. Petersburg at the Experimental Sound Gallery (GES-21) and two tracks recorded at the electronic music festival Free Fly Fest 2 at the Spartak club in 2000. The album also features two studio tracks and one hidden bonus track. Some compositions from "Live In Heaven" were later included in the album "Pustota" in modified versions - "Sample Rate" turned into "Alteya" and "Output" into "Selva". In the early 2000s, Theodor Bastard's live acts were electronic performances based on the themes of alienation and mechanization of the surrounding world. The band members went on stage in gas masks and ingenious hats looking like "universal soldiers" helmets. In the beginning of 2001 the first live recording was made in the Experimental Sound Gallery featuring the vocals of Yana Veva, who had previously played mainly guitar and clay whistle. Among the musical instruments used by the band on stage at that time were bongs, flute and jew's harp, as well as analog synthesizers and noise generators. Flashing lights and costume shows provided a special atmosphere to these experimental acts at the junction of underground and pop music.

Theodor Bastard - Volch'ya YagodaTheodor Bastard "Volch'ya Yagoda" (CD)

Label: Theo Records, 2020 - THEO 008.
Collector's edition: 4-panel digipak, deluxe slipcase, 8-page booklet. Limited edition of 500 copies.
Release date: 09.04.2020

The long-awaited new Theodor Bastard album Volch'ya Yagoda is a major work the band has been working on for the past five years. Theodor Bastard albums aren't released very often, but they invariably attract increased attention of audiophiles and music critics. The multilayered and unpredictable album Volch'ya Yagoda inherits the band's recognizable multigenre approach where psychedelic trip hop combines with cinematic instrumentals and archaic world music meets modern technological electronics. Theodor Bastard combine Russian texts with glossolalia and shamanic spells as easily as they change instruments on stage. Yana Veva and Fedor Svoloch compose music not only within the band, they regularly record soundtracks for popular computer games. Over many years they have sharpened the art of weaving complex sound canvases where the listener feels like in a labyrinth. From album to album Theodor Bastard carefully and masterly combine many different exotic and traditional instruments. Volch'ya Yagoda is no exception. The special northern atmosphere of the album is created with Nordic nyckelharpa and jouhikko, primeval flutes created from tree roots and shamanic percussion. And as always, the leading role in the album belongs to the voice of Yana Veva, exciting and bewitching by its deepness. Volch'ya Yagoda takes the listener to the cold and twilight realms of marshy swamps of taiga and mossy tundra, to unexplored places where the earthly plane and the spiritual world are separated only by a very thin ghostly veil. For over twenty years Theodor Bastard have been known for their amazingly serious attitude to the world beyond that very frontier.

Label: Theo Records, 2018 - THEO 007.
Collector's edition: 4-panel digipak, deluxe slipcase with a cross-like hole, 20-page booklet. Limited edition of 500 copies.
Release date: 09.11.2018

"Beloe: Hunting For Fierce Beasts (10th Anniversary Edition)" is the edited and re-mixed version of the significant album for Theodor Bastard. This version with new improved sound is dedicated to 10 year anniversary of the original album. Originally released on October 27, 2008, the album "Beloe" was accepted by critics as one of the first and important works in Russian ethno-electronics, clearly addressing to Russian folklore and at the same time sounding modern and topical. Written completely in Russian, full of Russian folk motives, this album had become a turning point in Theodor Bastard's evolution. The new edition of "Beloe" contains the best versions of songs from the both original releases of the album (Russian and Argentinian), selected by the musicians. Some compositions are published in Russia for the first time; this makes the anniversary edition especially important. Gusli had appeared among the band instruments first on this album, performed by Maria Akimova. Also many guest artists had participated in the recording: Mila Fedorova (cello), Eugene Fedotov (guitar), Elena Tishina (harp), and the band Ole Lukkoye frontman Boris Bardash sang in one of the songs. Most of the album lyrics were written by Yana Veva, the lead vocalist of Theodor Bastard. The conceptual design of the release was done by Fedor Svolotch based on his own paintings. The exibition of Fedor's paintings dedicated to the release of this album will take place in Moscow and Saint Petersburg galleries within the upcoming band's tour. Like in the first edition, the new version of the album "Beloe" has a unique design - a digipak with a big 20-page booklet is placed in a slipcase made of high-quality cardboard with a cross-like hole.

Label: Fulldozer Records / Zhelezobeton Distribution Division, 2018 - FDCD41 / ZHBD-17.
Digisleeve with two cards. Limited edition of 300 copies.
Release date: 29.09.2018

"BossaNova_Trip" is the highlight of the early experimental period of Theodor Bastard. A non-vocal electronic album recorded by Fedor Svolotch (Alexander Starostin) in 2002 several years before the formation of the band’s key line-up. 14 original utterly minimalistic tracks of the album were on the cutting edge of the avant-garde trends of that time and are worth comparing to the best glitch releases of such labels as Mego, Raster-Noton and Sonig. Aimed at the most sophisticated music lovers, "BossaNova_Trip" has completely fulfilled the ambitions of Fedor Svolotch as a skillful master of sound design and had a strong influence on the unique sound of the later well-known albums of Theodor Bastard. It was on this recording that the track "PU's_Tota" originated in its initial electronic proto-version which, in highly modified form, became the band's first major hit two years later. This reissue features a bonus track - the vocal version of "PU's_Tota", originally released on the compilation that came along with the BulDozer#2 magazine. The melody and the lyrics sung by Yana Veva, which are now so familiar to the fans of Theodor Bastard, appeared in this version for the first time.

The album name is a Latin transliteration of the Russian word for branches bearing in mind the branches of the World tree which supports the heavens, connecting the heavens, the terrestrial world, and the underworld. It's music combines elements of world music, neofolk, dark wave and trip hop. The hallmark of the album is female vocal by lead singer Yana Veva, her unique voice filled by glory and in the same time by meditative serenity and mild warmth. The musicians use classic instruments as well as electronic instruments and numerous ethnic instruments. Theodor Bastard release their albums not so often, working for months in various recording studios in several cities and countries, searching for the best sound and arrangements. The work on this album took three years with plenty of musicians taking part in it. Continuing the theme of wanderings, which was the basic idea of the previous album Oikoumene, Theodor Bastard take their listeners from hot south to the fairy northern lights. A peculiar combination of the archaic percussions and folk instruments was used during the recording. Playing unusual ethnic instruments is still an important part of Theodor Bastard creative process. Russian horn, traditional Mongol violin morin khuur, ritual tibetian horn dunchen, ancient Russian gusli, cajon, jew's harp, dulcimer (string instrument like zither) - this is just a short list of musical miracles of the album. Many musicians were engaged in creating this sound kaleidoscope. That was a serious and laborious work.

Theodor Bastard - Pustota (2014 edition)Theodor Bastard "Pustota" (2014 edition) (CD)

Label: Theo Records, 2014 - THEO 004.
Jewelcase, slipcase, 16-page booklet.

10 years anniversary of "Pustota" album. Completly remastered version on professional gear. The reissue of “Pustota” is a result of thorough reconstruction and restoration of the compositions the audience first heard and remembered from the original version of the album, recorded by Theodor Bastard in 2004. Today, after 10 years, it can be said that “Pustota” became a real creative experiment that broke the stereotypes created by the band’s previous works. In 2004, “Pustota” was released by several labels at the same time, such as Pandaimonium (Germany), The Art Records (Mexico) and Muzikal Yapim (Turkey). In Russia the album, as other works of Theodor Bastard, was released by Fulldozer Records. According to the members of the band, it was in “Pustota” that they found an extremely harmonious combination of electronic beats and ethnic instruments, and that was the main reason behind the album’s success. It was here that Yana Veva found her unique singing manner, combining the Oriental motives with Balkan and Russian tradition. The lyrics were experimental, too. In “Pustota”, along with texts in Russian and English, you will find songs in Pushtu and Urdu. In some compositions Yana uses so called glossolalia, the combinations of words and sounds which lost their original meaning. Such a technique can often be met in traditional spells and in folk song refrains, and is a part of many sacral traditions, both Christian and Pagan.

Theodor Bastard - OikoumeneTheodor Bastard "Oikoumene" (CD)

Label: Theo Records, 2012 - THEO 003.
6-panel digipak, 16-page booklet.

SOLD OUT!!!

The title refers to an ancient Greek notion, designating the inhabited or "civilized" sections of our planet, in other words those where mankind has left its mark - for better or worse. That global sweep is certainly echoed in the list of contributors, since our Russian artists are joined here by representatives of British, Zulu, Indian, and French-African traditions. Consequently, the list of instruments employed - and their home nations - is even longer. "It was interesting to reject electronic tools and all their trickery, as we worked instead with live material. That meant an entire year of stressful effort, but what an experience it was! Collaborating with so many genuinely talented musicians from all over the world gave us a special energy. We still feel it now!" A textual connection between the diverse tracks was spun by a single person, Theodor Bastard's vocalist Yana Veva. She worked "under the inspiration of various traditions and faiths, which represented aboriginal peoples from far-flung corners of the planet... They all live side by side with nature's wilderness, in places where ancient traditions endure. It doesn't matter which culture we're talking about - spiritual traditions just survive in places like that. For some people they might be little more than myth and fairytales, but for others those rituals are as real as our own urban jungle!"

YAT-KHA. WE WILL NEVER DIE - Lollipoppe Shoppe (Germany), 2021
Yat-Kha - We Will Never DieThe eighth studio album of the Tuvan band Yat-Kha, which focuses on the voice of the charismatic leader of the group Albert Kuvezin, is accompanied by his long-time friend and colleague Sholban Mongush. The album was recorded in Southern Germany, after the 2019 European tour, in the studio of krautrock legend Hans Joachim Irmler (Faust). In the spring of 2020, several additional tracks were recorded in Abakan (Khakassia). In addition to the usual songs, the album contains compositions collected from sayings and spells of Tuvan shamans, whose traditions form a continuous pedigree up to the Neolithic period. >>

CISFINITUM. MONOCHROME - Zhelezobeton / Aquarellist / KultFront, 2019
Cisfinitum - MonochromeThe album is dedicated to Dmitry Vasilyev, a musical educator, publisher, and ascetic. Initially, composer Evgeny Voronovsky conceived "Monochrome" as a futuristic mass of "high resolution" - an alchemical fusion of angelic chorales and dub-techno pulsations. The news of Vasilyev's tragic death caught the author of the recording rendering the final mix, redefining the meaning and purpose of the work that lasted for a whole year. "Monochrome" became a funeral service for a close friend, a man whose role for independent electronic music in Russia cannot be overestimated. >>

ALLERSEELEN. DUNKELGRAUE LIEDER - Aorta / Indiestate Distribution (Austria / Russia), 2017
Allerseelen - Dunkelgraue LiederThe new album Allerseelen is a radically revised version of the album "Sturmlieder", originally released in 1996. Now Gerhard Hallstatt offers a new look at this classic work. The CD contains all tracks from the 1996 album in shortened remastered versions and 7 additional tracks. Some of the new tracks were inspired by the American black/folk/post-metal band Agalloch, Gerhard first met them in 2010 - it happened during the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull. >>

NOTCHNOI PROSPEKT. POLYURYTHANE - Frozen Light, 2017
Notchnoi Prospekt - PolyurythaneThe first studio album of the legendary band since 1993! Notchnoi Prospekt was founded in 1985 by Alexei Borisov and Ivan Sokolovsky. The group worked in various genres ranging from dance synthpop to industrial music, becoming one of the most innovative projects of the Soviet musical underground. The style of the album "Polyurythane" balances between new wave, industrial and art rock. Alexei Borisov, Dmitry Kutergin, Olga Nosova and other musicians took part in the recording. Sound designer - Evgeny Voronovsky (Cisfinitum). >>

OLE LUKKOYE. DYATLY - Trail Records (US), 2015
Ole Lukkoye - DyatlyIn April 2015, the St. Petersburg band Ole Lukkoye released a new album "Dyatly", published by the American label Trail Records. The album was recorded for two years at different Russian studios. After the material was recorded, the musicians came up with the idea to leave everything as it is and, as far as possible, avoid revision. As a result, only some vocal parts and percussion were recorded before the final mixing. The tracklist of the album consists of five tracks, and the transitions between them are made so smoothly that it seems as if you are listening to one endless song. >>

MACHINEFABRIEK. DUBBELTJES - Zoharum (Poland), 2014
Machinefabriek - DubbeltjesMachinefabriek's music combines elements of drone ambient, glitch, field recordings, minimalism and post-classical avant-garde. This territory is successfully exploited by artists such as Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Oren Ambarchi and Stars Of The Lid. Unlike industrial music, Machinefabriek's improvisations are always very friendly, warm, and conducive to a leisurely exploration of a strange, surreal world. The new album is a compilation of 12 rare tracks released on low-volume 7-inch, cassettes and CD-R in the period from 2008 to 2013. >>

COLLOQUIO. L'ENTRATA - L'USCITA - Eibon Records (Italy), 2013
Colloquio – L'Entrata - L'UscitaGianni Pedretti, a resident of Bologna, organized Colloquio in the early 90s with the intention of exploring musical territories where advanced electronics intersect with the Italian song tradition. The new album continues to expand the sound horizons. In it, melancholic Italian ballads performed by Pedretti are successfully combined with cold minimalistic post-digital arrangements. Several guest musicians took part in the recording of the album, performing the parts of saxophone, flute, double bass and drums. >>
